Thursday, our internship ‘retreat’, we took a bus outside the city and had a great traditional Korean meal at a bed and breakfast in a small mountain village. On the bus, we guys had a competition to see who could stand the longest without steadying ourselves with a hold-bar or grabbing a seat. It was awesome! There were so many people on the bus we kept bumping into who would just give us insolent glares or look at us with curious faces!
I won.
In the middle of the village there’s a square with a stage, a Korean swing (standing swing, thirty- to forty foot tall), and an exercise park. The exercise park looks like a children’s playground except all the equipment is for stretching or fitness for adults. There are rotating footpads to work your core rotation, high bars for pull-ups, hanging squat machines. It’s pretty ingenious actually. I would totally lift weights if it was fun like this!
We threw a football around for awhile, getting stares and hushed conversations between all the onlooking old Chinese people waiting around for the bus. We headed up a trail behind the village to get to the top of the mountain and overlook the village and Yanji. The first part of the hike is stepped and has a bunch of beautiful stone circular tables for people to picnic at or play Chinese chess.
Great views of the village and Yanji. We headed back, listened to the ‘story’ of one of our workers at the b&b, and headed back to town. Because we had to get up early for Friday’s trip, we just watched movies and headed to bed.
